How to open a DWG file on a Chromebook
ChromeOS cannot open DWG drawings by itself, and most CAD software does not run on it. A browser-based viewer works straight away, with nothing to install.
Open a DWG in Chrome
- Open DWG Plotter in Chrome.
- Click the drop area and pick the file from Files: Downloads, Google Drive or a USB stick all work. You can also drag it from the Files app.
- Click a sheet to view it large, zoom in, switch layers on and off, or measure.
- Click Download PDF to save a copy that opens in the Chromebook's own PDF viewer.
Why this suits a Chromebook
- Nothing to install. School and work Chromebooks often block app installs. A web page needs no permission.
- No upload. The drawing is read on the Chromebook itself, which helps on slow connections and keeps the file private.
Other options
Some Chromebooks can run Linux or Android apps, and there are CAD apps for both. They take more setup, need a reasonably powerful Chromebook, and are mainly worth it if you need to edit drawings.
Questions
Can I open a DWG from Google Drive?
Yes. In the file picker, open Google Drive and choose the file. It is read on your Chromebook, not sent anywhere else.
My Chromebook is slow. Will it cope?
Ordinary drawings open in a few seconds. Very large files take longer and need more memory, so close other tabs first.
